How much does Google Ads cost in Canada? (2026)
Published June 1, 2026 · 5 min read
Two numbers make up the cost: what you pay Google for clicks, and what you pay someone to manage it. This guide is the first one, with real figures. (What an agency charges to run it is its own guide.) The short version: you set the budget, you pay per click, and your cost per click is set by how many businesses are bidding for the same searcher, not by Google.
What you pay per click (Canada, 2026, typical)
There is no monthly Google fee and no contract. You set a daily budget and pay each time someone clicks. The price per click is set by how many businesses are bidding for the same searcher:
- Lower-competition local and niche terms: often around 1 to 3 dollars a click.
- Competitive categories (legal, trades, insurance, medical, home services): commonly 5 to 50 dollars or more a click.
Yours depends on your industry and city, so treat these as the typical spread, not your quote.
A sane starting budget
For most local small businesses, plan 500 to 1,500 dollars a month in ad spend to start. That is enough to gather real data in most markets. If your clicks run 20 dollars in a competitive trade, push toward the top of that or higher, because a 300 dollar month at 20 dollars a click is 15 clicks, which proves nothing. The first month is tuition, not profit. You are buying data.
The math that tells you if it pays
Judge Google Ads by cost per booked job, never by cost per click, and do not collapse the steps. There are three: a click, then a lead (a call or form), then a booked job. Illustrative, run your own: say a click costs 5 dollars, 1 in 10 clicks becomes a real lead, and 1 in 2 leads books a 1,000 dollar job. That is 20 clicks, so about 100 dollars of spend to win 1,000 dollars of work. Change any one of those rates and the answer flips. The number to chase is the one at the end of that chain, not the click price at the start.
Where budgets quietly leak
The search-term report. Left alone, Google will charge you for clicks on searches that were never going to buy. We have taken over accounts where a third of the spend was going to one irrelevant search that nobody had looked at in months. Someone has to be in the account every week cutting those, or a real chunk of your budget is just gone.

Common questions
What is the minimum budget for Google Ads?+
For most local businesses, 500 to 1,500 dollars a month to start, higher if your clicks are expensive. Below that you usually cannot gather enough data to learn anything.
Why is my cost per click so high?+
Competition. The more businesses bidding for the same searcher in your city and industry, the higher the click. Legal and trades run far above a quiet local niche.
Do I pay Google and an agency separately?+
Yes. Google bills for the clicks. If you hire help, they bill for managing it. What that management costs is covered in our Google Ads agency cost guide.
